What is an inlay?

Inlay

An inlay is an indirect filling of solid material, prepared at the laboratory and cemented into the tooth.

ADVANTAGES:

Inlays are superior in resistance to occlusal forces.

Protection against recurrent decay.

Easy to cleanse.

Marginal integrity.

Proper contouring for gingival tissue.

HOW IT IS DONE?

The Dentist prepares the cavity on the tooth.

An impression of this cavity is taken and sent to the laboratory and the inlay is fabricated, which is then cemented onto the prepared tooth

WHAT ARE THE MATERALS USED FOR INLAY?

  • Metals (gold alloy, base metal alloys).
  • Tooth coloured materials like porcelain, composites resins.

WHAT IS AN ONLAY?

ONLAYS

An onlay is same as inlay except it replaces a tooth cusp(larger surface area than an inlay).

It is done in cases of cuspal fracture and less remaining tooth structure.
