Sleep disorders in children

It is important to note that infants and kids breathe only through the nose while sleeping. If children breathe through the mouth, it indicates that there is a nasal block. This causes imbalance in the cheek and tongue muscles leading to a  V-shaped maxilla(upper jaw)and irregular arrangement of teeth.

What are the causes of sleep apnea in children?

  • Over weight and obesity,
  • enlarged tonsils
  • dental conditions such as an overbite
  • Down's syndrome or Pierre-Robin syndrome.

Orthodontists suggest that parents identify the issue at an early stage so that proper ENT evaluation can be performed and manage the disorder with certain  oral appliances. In case there is enlargement of tonsils, surgical removal has to be done.

With the required treatments and appliances, doctors can bring out the necessary changes at an early stage.
